Green living: how to make a positive contribution to the life of our planet. Make some small lifestyle changes to get the ball rolling, encourage others to do the same, and we will be helping the planet as well as ourselves. These few simple ideas for green living are easy to put into your lifestyle. Green living refers to a type of lifestyle that has the welfare of the Earth and local environment in mind.

As well as reducing the carbon in the atmosphere, which is believed to be contributing to global warming, a green living lifestyle also reduces waste products, the depletion of natural resources and the amount of toxins that are released into the air and water. Many of these strategies also save you money and improve your health.

You can make a few changes in your life to help reduce the volumes of carbon in the atmosphere that is choking the planet. When your destination is close, leave the car at home. It isn’t too hard to change to using public transport or car pooling to work. You could always walk or cycle to your destination. You are saving the planet and improving your health at the same time.

CFLs are compact fluorescent light bulbs which use less power to produce more light, so change over the bulbs on your home to save money and the environment. The CFLs can reduce energy consumption 70% and they last longer than traditional bulbs. You can save about $50 by replacing just 5 of your incandescent bulbs, so imagine the savings if you changed all of them? Switch household appliances off at the wall when not in use.

Improve the health of the environment and your body by eating more plant foods; plants remove carbon for the atmosphere and store it in the soil. Again, you are improving the health of your own lifestyle as well as that of the planet. Cattle compact the soil and produce large amounts of methane which is a harmful greenhouse gas. Eat red meat only twice a week and have a piece just the size of your palm; for the other meals eat fish and poultry meats.

The important three rules of reducing your environmental footprint are recycle, reuse and reduce. Reduce your use of plastic products because large quantities of toxins are released into the atmosphere during their manufacture. Collect some reusable cloth bags for your shopping and leave the plastic ones in the store. Limit your use of paper products in your home and office home. Recycle plastic bottles and packaging – be inventive in discovering new ways to use them again and again.

Reduce your water usage at home and at work. Shorten the length of your shower by only two minutes and save gallons of water as well as money off your water bill. You don’t need to turn faucets on hard; this wastes water as it just flows down the drain. Save water by using the washing machine rinse water to wash the car. There are many ways you can make your home more environmentally friendly, like installing solar hot water and heating, using blinds to control the inside temperature and planting trees to cool the house.

These few strategies will get you started on making changes that will benefit the environment. Research other things that you and your family can do to really make a difference to the life of our planet and your own health and well-being. Work on the issue as a family, because environmental problems affect us all.
